Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

We have a large multi-cultural and harmonious community in Enfield which embraces its diversity. Schools should provide a safe environment for all pupils, regardless of their religion, cultural heritage or sexual orientation. It is also important that pupils are given the tools to understand the world around them and to respect and comply with equalities legislation. Bullying and prejudicial treatment of any form is not welcomed at Bowes Primary School. 

 

Intent

Our PSHE curriculum enables pupils to continuously learn and develop the skills they need for life in an increasingly complex world. Pupils develop resilience and respect for themselves and others and are taught about the importance of physical and mental wellbeing.

The curriculum encourages pupils to reflect on how these transferable skills will enable them to become citizens of tomorrow, on a personal, community and global level. This progressive and inclusive curriculum has been specifically designed to consider the local context of our school and addresses topical issues that may affect and influence the lives of the pupils. 

Relationships: 

Our PSHE curriculum has been carefully planned and includes sex education to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain, ensuring they understand the diverse world they are growing up in today. It promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, tolerance and mutual respect of those with different faiths and beliefs, to instil the importance of kindness, treating everyone equally and respecting difference. Pupils explore the complexity of relationships they will have now and throughout their lives with a key focus on care and safety being paramount for positive, happy relationships. 

Health:

Our carefully planned curriculum enables pupils to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It supports them in developing both socially and personally, tackling many of the moral, social and cultural issues that they will experience throughout their lives. This curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge and capability to ensure their safety, mental wellbeing, good health and positive decision-making. We encourage our pupils to grow in confidence and self-worth, this contributing to school life and the wider community. 

 

Implementation 

We have designed a curriculum which echoes our school values. There is a focus on six key concepts: Being Me, Celebrating Differences, Digital Me, Changing Me, Healthy Me, and The World and Me. Relationship and Health Education is taught through each concept. 

The curriculum ensures progression with each year and this is built on as pupils advance through their school life. Planning is well sequenced and fosters the enquiry skills that pupils develop throughout other curriculum areas. 

The PSHE curriculum is delivered through a combination of dedicated lessons, assemblies and enrichment opportunities. Oracy is a fundamental aspect of these lessons. Pupils are encouraged to listen actively and respond appropriately, express their thoughts and opinions confidently and given the space to seek information and clarification through their own questioning. 

Our pupils reflect on their learning on a weekly basis and record the skills they have learnt, moments they are proud of as well as aspects of their work they have identified in which they can improve. 

 

Impact

Our pupils will be prepared for life outside school and the future. They will understand the importance of respectful relationships and physical and mental wellbeing. Having promoted personal development, our pupils will be independent and resilient; confident in managing their feelings and behaviour with an awareness of the impact they can have through their voices and when expressing themselves. With a developed confidence in managing risks and knowing how to seek help, pupils will apply their knowledge and skills learnt in PSHE into different contexts.

  • Charity events - Children in Need, Sports Relief, Comic Relief
  • Global awareness days/week - Anti-Bullying Week, World Mental Health Day, Children's Mental Health Week, Road Safety, Online Safety Week
  • Working with the local community - fire station, nurse, dentist, community police officer visits
  • Global and social action projects - WE Project, including annual visit to WE Day
  • Assemblies - NSPCC, anti-Bullying, The Felix Project, SMSC
  • Trips - Houses of Parliament, museums, parks, farms
