Spanish

Intent

Our goal is to create life-long linguists through the teaching of high-quality languages in Key Stage 2. We want to instil a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures.

Our curriculum ensures that, through carefully planned and sequenced lessons, pupils are able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity. They find ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they continually improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. We aim to give pupils a foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills to learning further languages at Key Stage 3.

Implementation

Pupils in Key Stage 2 take part in weekly Spanish lessons, devised and planned using the 'Language Angels' scheme of work.

The Language Angels programme is designed in line with the National Curriculum and supports pupils to meet the National Curriculum End of Key Stage 2 attainment targets (there are no Key Stage 1 attainment                                                       targets for Languages).

Pupils are given opportunities to communicate for practical purposes around familiar subjects and routines, ensuring there is a balance of both spoken and written tasks. Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks to paired and group work, including role-play and language games.

While there are opportunities for writing in each year group, this is a skill that is built upon over time. In Year 3, there is a heavier emphasis on developing oral skills, before incorporating written Spanish in Year 4 and beyond. Planned written tasks allow pupils to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt. They also discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Impact

The curriculum is the progression model. If pupils are able to demonstrate they are able to know and remember more against our curriculum expectations they are making good progress and attaining expected standards.

During and/after lessons, pupils are assessed through informal assessment techniques: questioning, conferencing, reviewing work against learning objective/success criteria, short retrieval activities.

At the end of units, pupils are assessed using high quality conversations and class-based tasks.

Beyond the Curriculum

Pupils are able to engage in purposeful dialogue in practical situations (e.g. ordering in a café, following directions, etc.) and express an opinion.

They will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the Spanish culture through topics learnt and are able to take this into the wider                                                       world and beyond.
